Kigali Car-Free Day
The Kigali Car-Free Day is a celebrated initiative that began in 2016 as a collaborative effort between the City of Kigali, the Ministry of Health, the Rwanda Biomedical Center, and the Rwanda Non-Communicable Diseases Alliance. This monthly mass sports program promotes physical activity, raises awareness about non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and supports Kigali’s vision of being a green and sustainable city.
Every first and third Sunday of the month, main roads are closed to motorized vehicles between 7:00 AM and 10:00 AM, creating a vibrant space for community fitness activities such as walking, jogging, cycling, skating, and group aerobics. The initiative also integrates free NCD screenings, including blood glucose, blood pressure, body mass index checks, and counseling, fostering preventive healthcare practices among participants.
As part of the Global NCD Alliance Forum 2025, we have the pleasure to invite to join the Kigali Car-Free Day happening on 16th February 2025 and experience this unique initiative firsthand. To ensure smooth coordination, we are collecting details about participants’ accommodation. This information will allow us to guide attendees effectively, align activities with the Forum itinerary, and provide necessary support throughout the event.
