Healthy Cities, Healthy Lives: integrating the response to the Double Burden of Malnutrition and NCDs in LMICs
Unhealthy diets and malnutrition are key drivers of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). In urban settings across low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), the double burden of malnutrition—where undernutrition and overweight and obesity coexist—is worsening, accelerating the rise of NCDs and placing increasing pressure on healthcare systems.
This session will bring together a diverse panel of experts from multiple sectors, along with individuals with lived experiences and youth advocates. They will discuss community-driven initiatives and coordinated multisectoral actions to address the double burden of malnutrition and NCDs in urban settings in LMICs.
Attendees will gain valuable insights into actionable interventions and policies to improve diets and promote health, such as strengthening primary healthcare, transforming food environments, and fostering community resilience. The session will highlight practical, collaborative strategies to combat malnutrition and reduce NCDs, offering solutions that promote long-term health in LMIC urban communities.
