Prioritising reduction of out-of-pocket health expenditures for people living with NCDs and mental illness through access to affordable quality medicines and products
Availability and affordability of medicines and health products has been underrepresented in the discussions held to date on the road to 2025. Treatment for noncommunicable diseases and mental health (NCDs/MH) places a significant burden on families through catastrophic out-of-pocket health expenditures (OOPHE) and exposes people to advanced complications. Despite this evidence, domestic and global investment in NCDs/MH has remained static or decreased.
If access to medicines and products aren’t prioritized for investment and action at the UN High-Level Meeting on NCDs, the Sustainable Development Goal targets will remain out of reach.
This session will bring together multisectoral players working to increase accessibility and affordability of NCD/MH medicines and products. We will highlight challenges and promising innovations that have shown potential to increase availability and affordability of NCD/MH medicines and supplies. We will end with a call-to-action adaptable for participants to advocate for sufficient investment to bring affordable NCD treatments and mental health support in reach.
